Synopsis of Medak District Potentiality Report

  1. Medak is a backward district in the state of Andhra Pradesh, lying close to the capital city of Hyderabad.  The district is characterized by a huge percentage (80%) of population being dependent on agriculture.  But for a few pockets which have a large concentration of industries, like Patancheru, Ramachandrapuram, Zaheerabad, Sangareddy, Siddipet, etc, industrial activity is very less.
  1. The district stands second to Ranga Reddy, in the number of Large and Medium enterprises, yet, the advantages of linkage has not taken place.
  1. Interior mandals of the district are saddled with poor literacy rates, low per capita income, and lack of entrepreneurship among the people.
  1. Resource endowment of the district is good, with main crops being rice, maize, jowar, sugarcane and chillies. A part of this produce can be processed in the district for value addition. Other areas where industrial exploitation of resources can be undertaken are poultry sector, cultivation of aromatic plants, horticulture produce, dairy development, etc.
  1. Backward and forward linkages are to be established and strengthened, and vendor development is to be encouraged to cash in on  the benefit of having a large concentration of Large and Medium industries.
  1. Industrial infrastructure is well developed in the district. Government of AP has constructed many industrial areas, and industrial estates.  There is a good network of bank branches, roadways, and communication facilities etc.  Entrepreneurship development needs thrust.  
  1. It is reported that tourist inflow into Medak district has almost doubled, when compared to 2001.  The employment generation, direct or indirect, too has shown an increase from 36,000 in 2002 to 45,000 in 2003. This potential sector can be exploited by encouraging rural tourism. Tourist operators, tourist guides, kiosks, handicrafts emporia etc can be encouraged.
  1. Agricultural implements, irrigation sets, sprinklers, rice mills, fruit processing, bio fertilizers, bio technology products, IT and enabled services, tourism, rural tourism, general engineering works, offer good scope for promotion in the small scale sector.
