A Profile of Andhra
Pradesh
SISI, Hyderabad compiled a “Profile
of AP” which gives in detail, the resources available-
agricultural, mineral, human, etc, and discusses the present
industrial climate in the district. The Profile also throws
light on the progress being made on the industrial front, the
incentives and concessions given to the industrial sector.
The achievements of the state in infrastructure development,
the industrial thrust areas identified for development, and
Government schemes and incentives are given in detail.
The following is the gist
of the Profile:
Andhra Pradesh is endowed
with fertile soil, perennial rivers, good forest cover, and
good mineral deposits. It has a wide agriculture base, with a
variety of crops like Paddy, Jowar, Bajra, Maize, Pulses,
Oilseeds, Horticulture crops like fruits, vegetables and
flowers, and commercial crops like cotton, tobacco, chilies
and other spices etc grown extensively.
The state has a population of
7.61 crores, of which 72.65% is rural. Literacy rate is 61.11
(male literacy is 70.85, female literacy is 51.17). Work
participation rate in the State is 45 %( All India 38%).
On the industrial front too,
the State has made rapid strides. The number of Small Scale
industries to 142960, with an investment of Rs.4361 crores,
providing employment to 12.71 lakh persons. The per unit
investment in the SSI sector too has seen a rise from Rs.1.3
lakhs in 1985 to Rs3.05 lakhs in 2003. The district-wise
stratification of the number of SSIs shows the maximum number
of units in Ranga Reddy district (17,153), followed by
Hyderabad (14,008) and Visakhapatnam (10,003). The product
wise stratification shows that maximum number of SSIs is in
the Food and food products category, followed Metal products
and mineral products. Exports from the State also showed an
increase, with the total exports touching Rs.13614 Crores.
Software, Drugs & Pharmaceuticals, Agro products and Leather
products are the major export areas.
The State has identified Agro
based sector, Leather and leather products, Pharmaceuticals,
Biotechnology, Tourism, etc as thrust areas for propelling the
growth rate. It has created new infrastructure like Leather
parks, food parks, Bio tech Park, Export Import Parks, etc to
provide an impetus. The new state industrial policy shows a
shift from capital subsidy to infrastructure and training
based support.
